GED INFORMATION

GED candidates may register in person at the Knox County Regional Office of Education, 121 South Prairie Street, Galesburg.

Registration hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am-4:30 pm

What are the GED Tests Like?

The content of the tests are writing, social studies, science, reading skills, and mathematics. The GED Tests are multiple choice with five possible answers given, with the exception of Part II of the Writing Skills Test, which is an essay. The GED takes about 7 hours to complete.

In addition to the five GED Tests, Illinois residents are required to satisfactorily pass the Constitution Examination. If you have already taken and passed this exam, you will need to provide proof from the school in which you took the exam. If you have not met the requirements for the Constitution Examination, you may take the exam through the Knox County Regional Office of Education free of charge.

Who can take the GED?

  • Adults may apply to the Regional Superintendent of Schools in their county of residence provided they meet one of the following criteria:
  • Applicants who are 18 years of age or older, maintained residence in the State of Illinois for at least 30 days, and are not high school graduates, but whose high school class has graduated.
  • A member of the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty, who is 17 years of age or older, and who is stationed in Illinois or is a legal resident of Illinois.
  • A ward of the Department of Corrections who is 17 years of age or older, or an inmate confined in any branch of the Illinois State Penitentiary or in a county correctional facility who is 17 years of age or older.
  • A female who is 17 years of age or older who is unable to attend school because she is either pregnant or the mother of one or more children.
  • A male 17 years of age or older who is unable to attend school because he is the father of one or more children.
  • A person who is 17 years of age or older who has been a dropout for a period of at least one year.
  • A person who is successfully completing an alternative education program under Section 2-3.81 or Article 13A of The School Code of Illinois.
  • A person who is enrolled in the youth education program sponsored by the Illinois National Guard (Lincoln's Challenge).

Can I study before taking the test?

Yes, in a variety of ways. Self-study books are available in most book stores at a cost between $5 - $15. Sometimes books are available in public libraries, also. Many public television stations and cable systems, such as the Learning Channel, show GED instructional programs.

How do I Sign Up for the GED Tests?

To sign up for the GED, you must fill out an application and pay the $35 application fee at the Knox County Regional Office of Education. Be sure to register as soon as possible, and not wait until the last minute, as only a limited number of people are allowed to test at one time.
