GREENING SCHOOLS GRANT PROGRAM Deadline: December 31, 2005 (for calendar year 2005) Funds Available: $500 - $2,500 Eligibility: Illinois schools, grades K-12 Areas of awards: As part of Governor Blagojevich's Safe and Healthy Schools Initiative, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has created a special grant program to fund environmental improvement ("greening") projects and activities at K-12 schools in Illinois. Funding for selected projects will be available to purchase products and/or equipment that will improve indoor environmental conditions, reduce waste and enhance energy efficiency. NEA NFIE LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP GRANT Deadline: June 1 for Nov. 15, 2005 notification; Sept. 15 for Feb. 15, 2006 notification Funds Available: $2,000 for individuals and up to $5,00 for groups Eligibility: Public school teachers grades K-12, public school education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff at public colleges and universities Areas of awards: The NEA Foundation provides $2,000 and $5,000 grants to public school teachers, public school education support professionals, and faculty and staff in public higher education institutions for the purpose of engaging in high-quality professional development or implementing project-based learning and break-the-mold innovations that raise student achievement. GIRLS GOING PLACES GUARDIAN LIFE INSURANCE SCHOLARSHIP Deadline: Postmarked by Feb. 25, 2005, received by March 4, 2005 Funds Available: $1,000 - $10,000 (varies by scholarship awarded) Eligibility: Any American girl aged 12 to 16 Areas of awards: Girls Going Places College Scholarship Program is the Guardian Life Insurance Company's annual initiative designed to reward the enterprising spirits of girls ages 12 to 18. Guardian awards college scholarships to 15 girls who demonstrate budding entrepreneurship; are taking the first steps toward financial independence; and make a difference in their school and communities. Scholarship prizes totaling $30,000 are awarded among three top winners and 12 finalists each year. The nomination period for the Girls Going Places Scholarship Program begins September and ends February. Winners and finalists are announced in May. Scholarships are presented to each winner and finalist in her community among her peers. TOSHIBA AMERICA GRANT FOR GRADES 7-12 Deadline: Year-round for grants under $5,000 and August 1, 2005 for grants over $5,000 Funds Available: Under $5,000 and over $5,000 Eligibility: Classroom teachers of math and science grades K-12 Areas of awards: Toshiba America Grants are available to classroom teachers to purchase hands-on materials directly related to a planning unit. Classroom teachers must be involved in the planning of the program and the project must take place during school hours, be in addition to the teacher's regular science and math units and take place over at least three class sessions. ROBERT H. MICHEL CIVIC EDUCATION GRANT Deadline: May 1 and October 1 Funds: From $500 to $6000 each Eligibility: Teachers of 4th - 12th grades, community and jr. college faculty, and college and unv. faculty. Priority given to: history, government, social studies, political science, and education. Areas of awards: Designing lesson plans, creating student activities or applying instructional technology in the classroom. INNOVATION GRANTS AND LEARNING & LEADERSHIP GRANTS The National Education Association's Foundation for the Imppovement of Education (NFIE) now offers more than 300 small grants of $1000 to $3000 each on an ongoing, year-round basis. These grants fund classroom innovations or professional development for improved practice in public K-12 schools and higher-ed. institutions. NFIE will award up to 250 Innovation grants worth $2000 per year, and 75 Leadership and Learning grants ranging between $1000 and $3000. MODEL SCHOOL PROGRAM Intel Corp.'s Model School Program gives every school in the United States the chance to apply for potential seeding of equipment. To apply, schools must submit an innovative proposal for using technology enhance instruction, and if Intel likes what it sees, it will match grant recipients with companies that can provide the equipment necessary to meet their needs.
