Paraprofessional Information and Testing

A paraprofessional educator is a teaching-related position, within a school, generally responsible for specialized or concentrated assistance for students in elementary and secondary schools.

To apply for an educator license with stipulations endorsed as a paraprofessional educator, individuals will:

  • Submit an application in the Educator Licensure Information System (ELIS). 
    • A $100 fee will be assessed electronically when the application is submitted (Additional fees may apply). 
  • Mail a copy of the high school diploma and official transcripts showing completion of the required college coursework sent to ISBE or to ROE 33 at 932 Harrison St, Galesburg, IL 61401.

An educator license with stipulations endorsed as a paraprofessional educator is not valid until it is registered. Once registered, the license is valid until June 30 immediately following five years of the endorsement being issued and may be renewed.

Requirements to Obtain an ELS Endorsement
as a Paraprofessional Educator

 

  • At least 19 years of age
  • One of the following:
    • Associate’s degree or higher
    • 60 semester hours of coursework
    • High School Diploma or GED and a score of 460 or higher on the ETS Parapro
    • High School Diploma or GED and the following scores on the ACT Workkeys:
      • Applied Mathematics/Applied Math (with a score of 4)
      • Reading for information/Workplace Documents (with a score of 4)

*Notes:

  • Paraprofessional licenses are valid for 5 years, and may be renewed with the payment of registration fees.
  • If you hold a Paraprofessional License and have a Bachelor’s Degree on file, you are qualified to be a substitute teacher
